- Sludge dewatering.
The plant treats 420 m³/d of industrial wastewater daily, which contains high levels of COD and Nitrogen. In order to achieve the required effluent parameters, a multi-stage treatment process was designed, which allows the treated water to be discharged directly in the river.
A state-of-the-art Membrane Bio-reactor (MBR) - a combination of biological treatment and membrane filtration - was installed, as well as Reverse Osmosis (RO) for a partial flow of 130 m³/d, which enables water recycling and the sustainable reuse as boiler feed water.
Start up: 2023
Main components/ process steps:
- Mechanical solid separation;
- Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF);
- Weekly balancing tank;
- Biological treatment & Ultrafiltration;
- Membrane Bioreactor (MBR);
- RO system;
- Sludge buffer tank;
- Sludge dewatering.
Main Technology:
MBR, Reverse Osmosis.
The aim of the project is to achieve effluent quality parameters according to the Romanian water quality regulations (except TSS).
Treatment capacity: 5.820 m³/d
Design-Build-Operate: 15 years O&M
Main technology: MBR
Start up: 2022
The multi-stage treatment system includes:
•Neutralization Tank-Compartment 1 & 2
•Emergency buffer tank
•Coagulation & Flocculation
•Lamella clarifiers
•Buffer/clarified water storage tank
•Anoxic selector tank
•Membrane Bioreactor (MBR – Fibracast system)
•Sludge dewatering
The MBR system represents a special feature: As opposed to the MBR systems implemented so far, a new system from FIBRACAST is being used. This technology uses so-called hybrid membranes - a hollow fibre flat plate - which offers several advantages, such as backwashing of flat plates, and which is also an extremely compact system with small footprint and significantly reduced energy consumption.
The state-of-the-art factory of Philip Morris International (PMI) in Otopeni, located very close to Bucharest, was built in 1997. The production capacity was extended by a new process line. The facility for treatment of industrial and domestic effluents no longer met the new requirements with regard to volumes and pollution loads in line with the expansion.
WABAG was awarded to install a new WWTP serving the new production line and has designed a tailor-made multi-stage treatment plant employing advanced technologies to meet all requirements.
The plant is designed for a capacity of 800 m³/day with additional treatment possibility of 800 m³/day for utilities wastewater to make it suitable for discharge or reuse.

WABAG Water Services SRL was awarded the refurbishment and extension of the WWTP of the KASHIRA (Russia) snacks manufacturing site of PEPSI Co. Int., located near Moscow.
Since 2002 PEPSI Co. has been producing potato chips at Kashira, which represents the first snack production facility of the company in Russia. After roughly 15 years of operation, it is intended to expand the production capacity including its wastewater treatment plant, which also demands for some modernization works.The order includes the renewal and extension of the electro/mechanical equipment, comprising pre-treatment, anaerobic treatment and CAS and sludge treatment.The capacity of 45 m³/ is to be increased to 60 m³/h. WABAG is responsible for the design, equipment supply, installation,commissioning and start-up.Technology:
UASB, CAS
Scope:Design, equipment supply, installation, commissioning and start-up.
WABAG Water Services SRL was awarded the contract for the refurbishment of the existing Dragon WWTP for the production facility for beverages in Bucharest for PEPSI Co. International.
The project mainly comprises of the renewal of technical equipment and the refurbishment of clarification tanks.
The existing mechanical/ biological WWTP with a capacity of 2,550 m³/d is based on the MBBR-process.The modernization works have been completed end of 2017. WABAG has taken also responsibility for the plant operations for a period of 15 months.

Sludge dewatering system
Specially for the requirements of this field, an unique innovative process was developed, which includes physical, chemical and biological cleaning stages, as well as post-treatment and adsorption technologies. Due to specific oil extraction processes the produced water contains large quantities of non biodegradable organic compounds. A multi-stage deep treatment process was tested for several months in real conditions on a pilot plant and successfully passed the tests.
Type of contract:
General contract for design, supply and construction with turnkey delivery (EPC)

WABAG Water Services SRL, Romania has been operating the Refinery ETP in Brazi since April 2008 within the frame of an outsourcing contract awarded by OMV Petrom SA. The ETP with a capacity of 30,000 m³/d has undergone a comprehensive refurbishment and technological optimization and upgrading programme. The modernization process commenced in 2010 and was realized in two phases during continuous plant operation.
WABAG has realised a compact refinery ETP for the KAR Refinery in Erbil Iraq.
New and more stringent environmental standards demanded for an environmentalfriendly wastewater treatment and disposal. WABAG has designed a compact ETP which was manufactured and preassembled and as containerized plant delivered at site where the commissioning was completed.
To meet the specific conditions of the effluents - a temperature of 70°C and an extremely high sulphur content – a multi-stage process including cooling tower was employed.
Capacity: 2.400 m³/d
Raw water: Crude oil processing effluents
Technology: Multi-stage treatment
WABAG Romania was awarded the contract for the operation and maintenance including technical adaptation works of the existing mechanical/biological effluent treatment plant of the Arpechim Refinery in Pitesti.
The plant treats 30,000 m³/d of industrial wastewater daily, contains high levels of oil and specific contaminants such as phenol, ammonia and hydrogen sulphide. In line with the required treatment performance, the wastewater plant has several treatment stages, which facilitate direct discharge into surface water.The plant has been operated by WABAG starting in April 2009. In 2016, the contract was extended by O&M for pumping station and potable water treatment plant, together with optimization measures for enhancing efficiency of plant management.
