Each refinery or petrochemical complex has a specific wastewater composition based on the production capacity and the products. Today we can say that wastewater is the unique fingerprint of each site. In areas where water is scarce , clients may choose (partial) recycling of treated wastewater or even go all the way to Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) plants in order to minimize the cooling of utility water intake from natural resources. Reusing & recycling also helps with regulatory compliance, protects environment and optimizes the water balance.
All water and wastewater treatment plants generate large quantities of chemical and biological sludge that have to be managed. In many locations sludge handling represents up to 30 or 40% of the plant’s operational costs.
